Why Family Mediation?

Family mediation is a support for families or couples who find themselves navigating separation or other family changes. The aim is to help you and your ex-partner move forward and make practical arrangements around your family, children and finances that have everyone's interests at heart.

Mediation is voluntary, confidential and impartial. It aims to reduce stress and conflict and to provide an alternative to solicitors and going to the family court. The average cost of a divorce through the courts has been estimated at £14,561 (MoneyHelper). Mediation gives you the opportunity to reach lasting decisions yourselves at a much lower cost.

As your mediator I will work on improving communication, help you to feel more in control in a safe environment, and to explore the options for your children and how financial needs can be met.

Dominick French, family mediator, on the Somerset coast

About Dominick

I'm a family mediator based in Somerset, helping families across Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire navigate separation with compassion and understanding.

Before training as a mediator, I spent 30 years as a documentary filmmaker, working closely with people facing some of life's most challenging moments. That work taught me how to listen deeply, hold space for difficult conversations, and help people find their own way through.

Having experienced separation both as a parent and as a child, I understand the emotional complexity involved. I combine that personal insight with professional training to help families communicate, find common ground, and reach agreements that work for everyone.

I am registered with the Family Mediation Council and a member of the Family Mediation Association.

How Mediation Works

The decision to mediate is completely voluntary. We will meet with you initially for a MIAM (Mediation Information Assessment Meeting) — an opportunity to explain a little about the process, but more importantly to understand your current situation, the impact it is having on you and your children, and what you would like to achieve.

If your ex-partner is in agreement, we will conduct a separate MIAM with them. Once each MIAM is completed, the next step is a Joint Mediation Meeting. For most child arrangement cases, a single joint meeting will be enough. In more complex situations involving property and finances, more sessions can be added to support you in achieving a satisfactory resolution.
